Vice President of Health, Safety & Environmental

Shirley Parsons has partnered exclusively with The Port of Virginia in a search for their Vice President, Health, Safety & Environmental, to lead the EHS function, based in Norfolk, VA. 

Reporting directly to the COO, the Vice President of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) will be responsible for developing and implementing health, safety, and environmental strategies to ensure the well-being of the port’s employees, represented workforce, key stakeholders, and the communities in which they operate. This role is responsible for influencing the port’s culture towards world-class by minimizing injury risks and integrating health, safety and environmental programs across the Port of Virginia.

***This is an on-site position in Norfolk, VA that will require highly visible leadership, therefore a remote setup is not available for this role***


The Role:

  • Provides leadership and direction to the HSE team, to include training, coaching, and mentoring, ensuring that goals and objectives are met.
  • Maintains current knowledge of developments in health, safety, and environmental fields, and changes in federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Influences the port’s culture through health, safety, and environmental policies, procedures, training, and programs, following regulatory requirements and leading practices.
  • Conducts regular program audits and inspections to assess compliance with HSE policies and regulations and improvement opportunities.
  • Collects, measures, and analyzes enterprise and site-specific HSE metrics and performance indicators to identify trends for continuous improvement and corrective measures
  • Collaborates with other departments to integrate HSE considerations into business processes and decision-making.
  • Provides leadership for all aspects of enterprise safety monitoring at port facilities. This includes defining requirements, securing federal grant funding, and directing the acquisition, deployment, and employment of terminal-based mobile equipment video monitoring systems, as well as overseeing the development and implementation of state-of-the-art technology.
  • Leads the development and implementation of the port’s environmental policies and initiatives to make positive traction toward improving air quality.


The Candidate: 

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a HSE leadership position, preferably in a heavy industrial environment, with strong knowledge of HSE regulations and standards, including OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a fast-paced, dynamic, matrixed environment. Experience in a union environment is strongly preferred. 
  • Excellent leadership, communication and relationship-building skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field required
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Master's degree preferred.
